It seems that Jesse DePinto, the CEO of Frontdesk, has informed the employees about the company's intention to pursue a state receivership as an alternative to filing for bankruptcy. In a surprising move, this unfortunate decision was conveyed to employees during a brief "two-minute Google Meet call."

According to TechCrunch, the layoffs affected not only full-time and part-time workers but also contractors, pushing the proptech startup to the brink of closure.

As of now, Frontdesk has refrained from providing any official statement regarding this distressing development.

Founded in 2017, the startup successfully managed a portfolio of over 1,000 fully furnished apartments across the United States. The company operates in 30 U.S. markets and offers 1,200 units spread across 170 buildings, specializes in providing temporary accommodations for travelers. Their primary goal is to create sustainable rental models.

Notably, Frontdesk secured approximately $26 million in funding from notable investors such as JetBlue Ventures, Veritas Investments, and Sand Hill Angels. Despite its previous achievements, the startup faced challenges in raising additional capital, resulting in an unsuccessful attempt. It also faced increasing challenges, such as problems with rental payments for multiple properties, which resulted in strained relationships with landlords. However, Frontdesk remained optimistic about its future prospects, as evidenced by recent job postings on LinkedIn, including a chief of staff position.

The report highlighted that the global technology industry, including startups, has been significantly impacted by the macroeconomic conditions, leading to the termination of over 425,000 employees worldwide. In India alone, more than 36,000 employees were laid off during the same period.

In 2023, the global technology and startup sector witnessed the unfortunate layoff of nearly 260,000 employees. This trend of employee layoffs persists as both Big Tech companies and startups navigate the challenging economic landscape.
