From Politics to Music: Song featuring Narendra Modi gets nominated for Grammy Awards 2024

Nominations for Grammy Awards 2024 has been announced and as a surprise, a song featuring Indian Prime Minister Narendra Modi's voice has been in there in the list.

The name of the song is "Abundance in Millets" and it has been nominated in the Best Global Music Performance category. It has been composed and sung by Gaurav Shah and Falguni Shah (Falu). The song includes a segment of the prime minister's speech on the significance of millets and the necessity of incorporating them into our diets. The prime minister's message about the health benefits of consuming millets is conveyed through music in the song.

The United Nations' Food and Agriculture Organization (FAO) has declared Year 2023 as the "International Year of Millets," a proposal brought forward by India, supported by 72 Countries and endorsed by the 75th Session of the United Nations General Assembly. Millets are traditionally considered secure crops for farmers due to their resilience and adaptability to various climates, including drought conditions.

India, being one of the largest producers of millets, produces all nine commonly known traditional millets. Millets are small-grained, warm-weather cereals that were once a staple in India. Millets, such as Sorghum, Pear Millet, Finger Millet, Foxtail Millet, Little Millet, Browntop Millet, Proso Millet, Barnyard Millet, and Kodo Millet have been a part of the Indian diet for centuries. However, during the Green Revolution, the focus was on high-yield crops to make India self-sufficient in food and so millets were slowly marginalized post green revolution era. 'Abundance in Millets' aims to raise awareness about the potential of this supergrain in minimizing world hunger.

Delhi HC Upholds PepsiCo's Patent Claim for Lay's Potato Variety

The division bench of the Delhi High Court has recently ruled in favor of PepsiCo, granting them a patent for a specific potato variety used in their popular Lay's potato chips. PepsiCo wins Patent Case In 1989, PepsiCo, a renowned New York based  American snacks and beverages manufacturer, established its inaugural facility in India with the purpose of manufacturing potato chips. A specific variety of potato seeds was provided to a group of farmers by the company, who then exclusively sold their produce to PepsiCo at a predetermined price. In 2019, PepsiCo initiated a lawsuit against a select number of Indian farmers for cultivating the FC5 potato cultivar, claiming patent infringement. Additionally, the company sought compensation of over Rs 10 crore ($121,050) from each accused farmer for the alleged infringement.
